At the time of the Civil War the castle keep in Colchester was no longer used as a fortress. In recent years it had been used as a prison. It looked very different from today, perhaps more like the artists impression opposite, which illustrates what the keep would have looked after completion in 1125, although by the 16th century parts has fallen down and it was in a poor state of repair.
