After the defeat of the Royalist forces, at Colchester, in the English Civil War in 1648, their leaders of the Royalist army (Sir Charles Lucas and Sir George Lisle) were executed in the grounds behind the castle, on the orders of Sir Thomas Fairfax. An obelisk now marks the spot.
