This obelisk is dedicated to two Royalist Commanders (Lucas and Lisle) who fought during the English Civil War. When the Royalists surrendered in the late summer of 1648, after an 11 week seige, they were shot in the grounds of Colchester Castle, under the orders of General Fairfax. Today the spot is marked by an obelisk. There is a myth that no grass will grow in this area. However this cannot be tested as the area is covered in tarmac.
