The Siege of Colchester of 1648, had a devastating effect on the town. It was only special pleading which prevented the Roman walls from being pulled down. After the conflict ended Parliament wanted an assurance that Colchester would never again be able to defy government forces in such a way. The town was fined very heavily for its defiance which led to a considerable decline in its prosperity and the well being of the people.
