Colchester has a number of old buildings that survived the damage of the English Civil War. The Red Lion was originally the private home of the Howard family, the Dukes of Norfolk. It was built in a very grand style in the 15th century. It was later converted to an inn after the dissolution of the monasteries by Henry VIII, when there was a shortage of accomodation.
