At the present time, the only pits we could find around Southwood and Cantley were muddy and filled in. In the story the Pit was very ancient, even at the time the story was set, several hundred years ago and may now have been filled in. The pit still existed in the 19th century when a account was writen, including the existence of a legend that a headless horseman still rises out of the pit.
