Wherries were trading craft used on the Broads from the 18th century to the 1950's. All were built to a similar pattern but in a range of sizes. They were usually ‘clinker built’, this means they had overlapping planks 'clenched' together to make them water tight, the wherry pictured (Albion) however has a smooth carved hull. They were driven by a single loose footed mainsail hinged above the deck that could be lowered for the craft to go under bridges. Picture courtesy of Tim Groves.
