This edible species is widespread and fruits mainly late autumn to early winter. It has rounded oyster shaped caps (often overlapping) and grows in dense clumps on dead or dying hardwood trees. The caps can vary from pale brown to deep blue/grey. It may have a whitish woolly coating in the centre in wet or cold weather. It has crowded narrow gills.
