The "Old Bridge" or Stari Most is a stone construction. It was originally built in 1566 by Mimar Hayruddin, by order from emperor Suleiman the Magnificent. It consisted of a humpbacked arch and was 4 metres wide and 30 metres long The bridge was flanked by two fortified towers, dating from to the 17th century. It was destroyed by mortar fire in the Bosnian war. The project to rebuild the bridge to the original design was initiated by UNESCO in 1999 and building was completed in spring 2004. It was officially opened in July 2004. The restored bridge is the only UNESCO World Heritage Site in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
