Rethymnon , on the north coast of Crete, has been inhabited since the Minoan period around 1400 BC.C. The city flourished under Venetian rule. It has a huge Venetian castle Fortezza, (built in the 16th century) overlooking a harbour and lighthouse. Construction of the Venetion harbour started in 1300. The wall, which surrounds the port, is of Venetian origin, whereas some extensions and part of the lighthouse were built later during the Turkish occupation .
