The Normans built a catle keep here between 1076 and 1125. The city was granted its first Royal Charter by King Richard In 1189, the first of many. The city was the site of an 11 week seige during the English Civil War in 1648 and in the morning of April 22, 1884, the Colchester area was at the epicentre of the UK's most destructive earthquake. The quake was felt over much of southern England and into Europe, and over 1,200 buildings were destroyed or damaged.
This picture shows part of the 11th century castle keep and the town crest.
