In AD 60 or 61, the Roman city or Colonia was virtually destroyed by Queen Boudicas army. Boudica was Queen of the Iceni tribe, from the area now known as Norfolk. Following the death of her husband (Prasutagus) and ill treatment by the Romans, she rallied an army from several British tribes and caused considerable damage to the Roman occupiers. 30,000 Romans and their followers were slaughtered in the town and the mainly timber buildings burnt. Beneath the city, a dark burn layer can still be found dating to this time.
