The largest surviving Roman gateway in Britain can also be found in Colchester. This view looking East shows the pedestrian arch. The remains are well preserved, but with some modern brick repair work at the top and modern flooring. Everything else is Roman. It is known as the Balkern gate because it was 'baulked' or filled in, probably in the late Roman period. This may be the reason the Balkerne Gate is so well preserved. It was only uncovered around a hundred years ago. Archaeologists took the decision to unblock the gate allowing people to walk through one of the archways.
