The area between the Balkerne Gate and St Mary's church, is also the place where people were martyred for their faith in the 16th century during the reign of Queen Mary. They were burnt at the stake for heresy. The Jumbo water tower seen behind was completed in 1883 to enable running water to be made available to the townspeople. It used 1.2 million bricks. It was so disliked by the vicar of the parish, that he likened it to Jumbo, the name of an elephant. The nickname stuck. It is now disused.
