The Augustinian priory of St. Botolph was the first Augustinian priory built in Britain, having authority over all other houses of the order. It was founded between 1093 and 1100. The dissolution of the monasteries under King Henry VIII in the 16th century, led to our St Botolph's Priory falling into decline - but it was the cannons of the civil war that reduced it ruin. The Siege of Colchester of 1648, saw the destruction of many historic buildings and ancient monuments.
