It appears (from archaeological studies) that this gate fell into disuse at some point during the Roman period, perhaps because the Head Gate was a more convenient entrance point into the colonia. All the other town gates have disappeared to allow for greater traffic flow. Despite being the earliest and most complete Roman Gateway in Britain only a fraction survives. Much of it was destroyed when the building, known as the Hole in the Wall public house was built.
