Blackthorn is a spiny ridged shrub or a small tree, of the rose family and plum genus. It grows in hedgerows, scrub and wood borders. It flowers mainly in April - May, the flowers are white and similar to those of Hawthorn but appear before the leaves. In late summer it produces blue-black globular fruits. Picture taken late February 2006 - Near Old Warden, Bedfordshire.
