A tall pine tree with a dense branching crown and very dark bark. It has paired leaves that are dark green and straight when young but then curve in. The buds have long pointed tips. The cones are like long lopsided Scots Pine cones. It is native to central Europe but widely planted in Britain for timber and ornament. The related subspecies laricio (Corsican Pine) is widely planted around Thetford. This picture was taken in Bedford in mid February 2006. The tree was full of cones.
