A large tree that can reach a height of 30-40 meters, with rough, furrowed brown bark and crooked branches. It producs yellowy-brown flowers in May. Male flowers on pendants and female flowers on short stalks. The acorn fruits develop late summer / early autumn. It can live for up to 800 years. Pictured at Icknield, Bedfordshire mid December 2005.
