A tall bulky pine with a rounded crown. Originally from California it has been widely planted and has become naturalised in some places. It is common in Southwest England both planted and self-sown. It has deep vertical channels in its bark which flakes. The long leaves/needles (10-15cm long) are borne in threes on the branches. They are bright green and very slender. The Female cones are 7-14cm and retained on the tree and are asymmetrical at the base (pictured). It also has distinctive male flowers. Picture taken 2nd March 2006 -Torquay.
