The sycamore can be recognised in winter by its upright green buds the scales of which are edged with brown. It has grey-brown bark. The sycamore tree can reach a height of 30-35 metres. It has distinctive 5-7 lobed leaves that are coarsely toothed. It can live for several hundred years. It flowers in April and May, producing small yellow green flowers on pendants. The fruit is winged and appears in late summer/early autumn enclosing a round seed. Picture taken late January 2006, near Old Warden, Bedfordshire.
