Now naturalised, this plant was probably introduced to Britain in the 15th or 16th century. It has dark green leaves arranged in pairs and produces purple flowers (usually borne singly) between March and May. This plant was said to be owned by Venus and it was used to make love potions as well as a medicine to stop bleeding. It was also known as the plant of immortality, probably due to its evergreen leaves and, in the middle ages, people awaiting execution sometimes wore garlands of the flowers. Picture taken at Bedford, April 14th 2006.
