A creeping and rooting herb (10 - 20 cm tall), softly hairy, with kidney shaped, blunt tipped leaves. It flowers March - May. The flowers are pale pink to violet with purple spots on the hanging three lobed lower lip. The tube is straight and tapered to the base. It grows in woodlands, grasslands and hedgebanks on all but the very poorest soils. Gournd ivy used to be added to ale before hops were introduced to sharpen the flavour. The leaves were used with honey to make a drink called ' gill tea, which was meant to be good for coughs and colds.
