This tree is slightly larger than Black poplar, which is now rare. It has no bosses on its trunk and has a neater crown with upward growing branches. It is a hybris between Black poplar (Populus nigra) and the American poplar (Populus deltoides). It has deep furrowed bark and produces bright red male catkins in late March and April. It has been widely planted for timber. Picture taken near Stagsden, Bedfordshire, 8th April 2006.
