This plant was possibly introduced in the Middle Ages. A red dye has been produced from its roots since Egyptian times. More recently it has been used for tinting oils and cheap port wine. It has a funnel shaped flower; the mouth of the funnel is partly closed by five white scales. The blue flowers are in pairs of coiled sprays. It is an upright hairy plant the leaves are long stalked towards the bottom of the plant and short stalked towards the top. It flowers May to June.
