A roughly hairy stemmed plant that grows extensively on the margins of arable land and on waste ground. It flowers from May to October. The plant is one of the most ancient pests of arable land. It grows after ploughing when the seed are brought to the surface. The seeds can lie dormant many years. It was once used as a boiled vegetable. Picture taken at Odell, Bedfordshire - May 14th 2006
