The leaves of hogweed develop before the flowers and by this time of year are a common site. Hogweed is a common species of the parsley family. Hogweed is a stout upright plant (60-180cm) with a ridged stem and deeply lobed crinkled leaves and many small clustered flat white flowers. It gained its name because in the past it was gathered for pig fodder. It contains a substance that can cause blistering. Picture taken 12th May 2006 at Old Warden, Bedfordshire
