The plant grows from 20-150 cm tall. With lobed leaves that are not spiny. The florets are pale yellow, the flower heads being from 2-2.5 cm across. It is very common on arable land, wasteland, roadsides and by hedgerows. It generally flowers June to October. Picture taken at Cardington, Bedfordshire on 16th May 2006.
