A very distinctive looking plant, common fumitory grows on cultivated and waste ground and roadsides. The plant produces nectar but this is not popular with insects and the plant usually self pollinates. Its name (comes from Latin and means smoke of the earth). It refers to the acrid smell its roots give off if they are pulled up and also to the sap which can make the eyes water like smoke if it comes in contact with them. The plant has tangled stems and blue/green foliage with slender deeply divided leaves. It flowers May to September. Its flowers are pink with dark tips.
