This plant has a ribbed stem and fruits tinged with red. The petals curve inwards and enclose an ovary in the centre. The male and female flowers are on different plants and the female flowers bend back after flowering. It is a sturdy upright plant with lance shaped leaves with backwards pointing lobes at the base. It was once a prized vegetable used in sauces for flavouring. Picture taken 29th May 2006 at Maulden Bedfordshire.
