The Guelder Rose is a native British shrub up to 4 metres high. It occurs throughout Britain in woodlands, shrub, hedges usually on fertile, moist soils. The berries should never be eaten raw as they are mildly poisonous. Cooking destroys the poison properties and they are sometimes used in preserves. The dried bark has been used medically as a pain/cramp cure and a sedative. It produces white/cream flowers usually in June-July and bright red fruits August to October. Pictured near Old Warden, Bedfordshire - 20th May 2006.
