This plant grows on waysides by hedgerows and near walls. Its four petal yellow flowers appear between May and August. It has grey-green pinnately lobed leaves. The slender seed capsules split from the bottom upwards and it has black seeds with a white appendage. It is a member of the poppy family and poisonous, although its sap was once used to treat skin complaints. Its seeds are carried by ants who feed on the oil and carry off the seeds. Picture taken at Elstow, Bedfordshire 7th May 2006.
