This plant is frequent in woods and shady places, generally in more lowland places or richer soils than the close looking Scaly Male Fern. Fronds are typically 30-120 cm.
The fronds have pinna and each pinna is itself pinnate. The pinnules are not further divided but toothed equally all round. The middle pinnae are the broadest, the basal ones much smaller. This is one of our commonest native fern species, found on roadside verges, in hedgebanks and in scrub. Picture taken at Felmersham, Bedfordshire 8th May 2006.
