The brown tubers of this plant were at one time known as the last resort of the starving. It is called pignut because pigs can smell the nuts and used to uproot them. The lower leaves are divided like those of the wild carrot but are not seen in the picture as they usually wither before the plant flowers May - June. The flowers are white and both male and female flowers grow on the same flower head. Pignut produces narrow beaked capsule-like fruits. Picture taken May 29th 2006 at Maulden, Bedfordshire.
