Most of Europe, including Britain, to N. Africa, temperate Asia and N. America. Meadows and grassy places, it is also found on dunes. It is common and widespread in Britain. It flowers from May to July. The flowers are hermaphrodite having both male and female organs and are wind pollinated.
The grows on light (sandy), medium (loamy) and heavy (clay) soils that are moist but well drained. Picture taken at Felmersham, Bedfordshire.
