Seeds from the tree. This tree is often confused with Black Poplar (Populus nigra) but is usually larger and has no bosses on its trunk and a neater crown. It is a hybrid between Black Poplar and American Poplar (Populus deltoides) and is widely planted for timber and ornament. Like Black poplar it has deeply furrowed bark, fine toothed glossy leaves and flat buds. The male trees bear numerous bright red catkins in April before the leaves.
