This low-growing mat-forming member of the stonecrop family is an evergreen. The leaves have a sharp taste, from which it gets its Latin name 'acre', meaning sharp. Leaves are egg-shaped, fleshy and yellow green. The star-like flowers are bright yellow. At one time it was thought to be a cure for ulcers, fevers and bleeding but had to be used with care as it could cause vomiting. People also thought it protected against thunderstorms. It grows on old walls, shingle and dunes mainly on limestone. It flower June to July. Picture taken at Elstow, Bedfordshire - 29th June 2006.
