The Welted thistle does not have such strong spines as the other thistles. and its leaf blades are wide and soft towards the base. It can also be distinguished because a wing or 'welt' runs down the stem (not shown here). It prefers moist soil in lowland countryside. Picture taken on 24th June 2006 at Stevington, Bedfordshire.
