This plant flourishes on disturbed soil. It is an upright plant with few branches, the prickly leaves hug the stem. Flower heads consist of numerous yellow florets, The fruiting head resembles a small dandelion and the seeds can be carried long distances on the wind. Despite the prickles the leaves can be eaten and the sap from the plant was once thought to increase milk yields in cattle. It flowers June - August.
