This plants bright flowers with overlapping petals are usually scarlet but can be pink and even white. The flowers only open for a short time each day between 8am and 3pm and not at all if it is overcast. Because of this it was also known as a 'Shepherd's sundial'. It is a sprawling many branched plant. The leaves are oval with pointed tips. It grows on agricultural and waste land. It was once valued as it was thought to cure madness and dispel the blues. Picture taken at Odell, Bedfordshire - June 4th 2006.
