A relative of the welted thistle, the musk thistle has deeply dissected leaves and long spines. The big drooping cup-shaped flowers are usually solitary and surrounded by spiny bracts, the outer ones being bent backwards. It flowers June to August and is common on damp grassy land. Picture taken at Stevington, Bedfordshire June 2nd 2006
