This grass can be recognised by its spike-like flower head. It is unique in having two different sorts of spikelet. One is sterile and gives the grass its spiky appearance, the other is fertile bearing brown/mauve stamens. It can be found throughout Britain especially on older well established grasslands. Picture taken 15th June 2006 at Maulden, Bedfordshire.
