This plant was growing on waste/grassland near an old church. It was in the middle of the open area and had not been planted but most likely an escapee from a cultivated plant. It belongs to the genus Consolida, often classified into the large genus Delphinium. The plants grow in southern Europe and North America. It is a plants of fields, hedgerows and fallow land. There are many cultivated varieties. The plants usually have blue pink or even white flowers. The upper sepal forms a long spur. The petals join at the base to form a spur. The leaves are divided into numerous thread-like segments. Picture taken 24th July at Elstow, Bedfordshire.
