This picture shows the female flowers. Sweet Chestnut is a large deciduous spreading tree with fissured bark. The leaves are oblong with pointed teeth (10-25cm). The male flowers are on long catkins with many yellow stamens and a sickly scent. The female flowers are at the base of the catkins in scaley cups with long spines. The fruits that develop inside the cups are brown. This tree was introduced to Britain like many others. It flowers July to October. Picture taken July 23rd 2006 at Maulden, Bedfordshire.
