This is a plant of poor soils, wood edges, dry grasslands and dunes. The plant is very variable and in good conditions it can be large and grow in lumps and in poor conditions small. It is a hairless plant. There is a rosette of leaves at the base of the plant as well as paired leaves on the stem. The leaves have prominent veins. The petal tube extends beyond the sepals. The flowers are pink. The plant was once used to heal wounds as well as other diseases. It flowers June to October. Picture taken 16th July 2006 at Old Warden, Bedfordshire.
