It is thought the alignment may have been divided into 'rooms' six to seven meters apart that formed family shrines. To the people of the time water was like a looking glass through which objects and the souls of dead people reached the next world. The gifts placed in the water may have been to prevent retribution (punishment for wrong doing) when a person's soul or spirit entered the next world.
