About 1300 years BC, farmers lived on the edge of the water meadows at Flag Fen in small round houses constructed from timber (alder and poplar growing in the fen) and turf with some reed thatch. In the depths of winter the families gathered together with their flock in one or two outhouses. In early spring the sheep grazed the small hedged fields. Later in April or May adults or children drove their livestock down drove roads to the water meadows. When the meadows started to flood again in late autumn the sheep would return to the fields. These farmers also hunted together in the wetlands for fish eels, duck and geese. They gathered nuts and berries and made carts and spears.
