The hall is thatched. Several layers of rye straw, known as a weathering coat are fixed to a layer of heather underneath using twisted rye rope and hazel spars as pins. The layers of rye straw are then tapped into place using a leggett to provide a slope and secured with the twisted rye rope and hazel spars. The ends of straw act like many little tiles and help the rain run off.
