The farm project at West Stow aims to grow crops that Anglo-Saxon farmers had in their fields, including beans, onions and other root crops as well as rye, flax or spelt wheat. Just like Anglo-Saxon farmers did, the crops are moved each year in rotation to help keep the soil fertile. The fields were alternated between wheat, root crops (beans, onions, radish etc) and livestock to provide a medium grade soil in which most crops would grow. But it would not have provided the abundant harvest that the type of crop rotation introduced in the 15th century provided.
