The great hall was a place of socialising and story telling. In the English Epic Beowulf, the hero slew monsters from the fen: he saved the King's hall and his warriors and was buried with treasure under a high mound. It also tells of Shield, son of Sheaf, mythical ancestor of English and Danish kings, given a wonderful funeral in a ship laden with wondrous gifts.
